THE END

It is rarely seen in contemporary cinema, but a final card with ‘THE END’ in giant text sprawled across the screen was a fairly common element in classic Hollywood films of the past. Its prominence began to die out in the 1970s and 80s when perhaps the old protocol of announcing the film’s finale was deemed unnecessary. Yet, there’s a particular charm to the habit, a sort of storybook touch to remind the audience that they have just enjoyed a good yarn.

You can enjoy a collection of Warner Brothers end cards here.
